The Hudson Valley Renegades' 2000 season, their fourth as Tampa Bay's short-season New York-Penn League affiliate, is charitably described as a difficult year. That season, the Renegades set the franchise record for losses by a considerable margin.[1] Despite the Renegade's poor showing in the standings, however, there were still several individual bright spots, particularly from players who would later have a role on Tampa Bay's major league roster, like Doug Waechter, Mark Malaska, Juan Salas & Seth McClung.

Summary

Preseason

The 2000 Renegades were guided by first-year manager Dave Silvestri, better-known during his playing days a utility player. Just the prior season, Silvestri had spent time with Tampa Bay's Triple-A affiliate, the Durham Bulls, and also had some time with the major league club during their inaugural 1998 season. Hudson Valley General Manager Steve Gliner called Silvestri "a real fireball" and predicted a good followup to Renegades' championship 1999 season. Former manager Edwin Rodriguez was reassigned to Princeton.[2]. Both pitching coach John Duffy and hitting coach Ramon Ortiz returned to those same roles from the prior season.[3]

All games were broadcast over the radio on WBNR (AM 1260), as they had been since the team's inaugural season in Hudson Valley, and called for a second year by Sean Ford. In addition, the Renegades worked out a deal to televise 10 games, beginning with the home opener, on local cable outlet MediaOne, with the action called by Kyle Doty and Freddy Coleman. They had been without a television broadcaster since a contract with Regional News Network (and its predecessor WTZA) had expired after the 1995-97 seasons.[4]

Season

After a win to start the season, Hudson Valley's fortunes turned sour quickly, including losing their first 12 road games. The first road win didn't come until July 14, 24 games into the season.[5] Throughout the season, the Renegades' receiving corp was also often thin, due to incidents like Dan Marsh's injuries[5] and the retirement of Kenn Wakakuwa[6] just ten appearances into his professional career.

The frustrating season obviously had an effect on the coaching staff. Following a double-header sweep by Auburn, Silvestri and Duffy complained about the lack of enthusiasm and emerging leadership from their players. Silvestri observed, "I ain’t see no one who makes it out of (Class) A ball if they have no heart."[7] Indeed, of the 33 players to make an appearance with Hudson Valley that season, only 12 made it to Double-A or above in a domestic, affiliated league for more than a handful of appearances (5 eventually made Major League appearances).

Despite the generally abysmal play through much of the season, there were some positives. Doug Waechter threw his and Hudson Valley's first-ever no-hitter on August 10 against the Pittsfield Mets.[8] First baseman Nate Kaup emerged as the team's top hitter after going undrafted out of UNLV and signing late into the season.[9]

Before the game of August 31, Silvestri was indefinitely suspended by the league following his third umpire-bumping incident. Ramon Ortiz took over managerial duties for the remaining 7 games of the season.[10] Silvestri had been ejected several times during the season (a trait shared with both his pitching and hitting coaches) and had served a 2-game suspension in early August for another umpire bump.[11]

After the season

On September 14, the Devil Rays and Renegades announced a four-year renewal to their player development contract, extending their relationship through at least 2004. Regarding the announcement of the extension, Devil Rays General Manager Chuck LaMar called Hudson Valley "one of the best managed minor league franchises anywhere."[12]
