The Durham Bull's 1999 season was their second as Tampa Bay's Triple-A International League affiliate. Following a strong inaugural season at Triple-A, the Bulls expected, and received, a similarly strong effort, winning the South division on their last day of the regular season. Despite a high level of turnover on the team, the offense remained a bright spot throughout the season (setting International League records for runs scored, hits, hits per game and team batting average[1]), though the pitching was occasionally suspect.

Summary

Preseason

On January 7, 1999, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays announced that manager Bill Evers, pitching coach Pete Filson and trainer Paul Harker would return to Durham for their second season, along with new hitting coach George Foster (known primarily for his role with Cincinnatti's "Big Red Machine" dynasty in the 1970s).[2] Foster, however, left the Devil Rays' system (due to "personal reasons") before the season even started.[3] Just prior to the club's first game of the season, Steve Henderson (Tampa Bays' hitting coach the prior season) joined Durham's coaching staff to temporarily fill Foster's position.[4]

Season

The Bulls opened the season with a couple strong pitching performances: Dave Eiland started the first game by allowing only 1 unearned run over 6 innings[4] and Bryan Rekar pitched 7 perfect innings in the next game before being removed due to an early-season pitch count limit (for which Bill Evans was heartily chastised by the fans in attendance).[5] By April 12, Mako "Max" Oliveras had been named the permanent hitting coach[6] and Steve Henderson returned to his duties as Tampa Bay's minor league hitting coordinator.[7] Throughout the season, the Bulls weathered an extremely dynamic roster, registering 121 individual transactions through August 19, fueled in large part by a rash of injuries for the Devil Rays' Major League sqaud.[8]

By the end of the season, Durham was near the bottom of the league in pitching (averaging 5.71 runs per game allowed), but that deficit was more than made up for in offense (scoring an average of 6.45 runs per game, tops in the league)[9] paced by first baseman Steve Cox and third baseman Scott McClain, who were each either first or second on the team in games played, at-bats, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, runs, RBI, and walks.[10]
